Big Bash outfit Adelaide Strikers have announced the signing of Pakistan’s premier spinner, Saeed Ajmal, for the upcoming second season.
Ajmal, who is widely regarded as one of the greats of modern-day cricket, will play in Strikers opening match against Perth Scorchers as cover for West Indian all-rounder, Kieron Pollard, and could return for the latter phases of the competition, depending on his availability.
The player has gone from strength to strength in recent times and is currently the no.1 ranked bowler in ODI and T20 cricket and sits behind South African pair of Dale Steyn and Vernon Philander in the longer version.
His spin variation and face value is expected to bolster not only Strikers' profile, but will further prove beneficial for the tournament itself. After signing for the Big Bash franchise, Ajmal expressed his delight and said that he is keen to showcase his talent Down Under.
"I am really excited about playing for the Adelaide Strikers and really happy that I will get the chance to show my talent in the BBL," Ajmal said.
"I am very keen to meet up with the rest of the boys soon and play my best in the games that I am available, with the hope that Adelaide make the final stages and I can return to help win the competition."
Strikers coach, Darren Berry, was also pleased to have Ajmal on board, and claimed that the pitches at Adelaide will suit his style of bowling. Also with Jon Holland, the Victorian spinner, ruled out of the season, it gives the team a like for like change.
"We know what this guy is capable of, having seen him run through both the Australian and English batsmen a couple of months ago, so to have him on board is a great result for the Strikers," Berry said.
Strikers further completed their squad for the second edition by recruiting South Australia’s wicket-keeper, Tim Ludeman, and Queensland’s right-arm leg-spinner, Cameron Boyce. Berry was impressed with the Ludeman’s glove work during the current domestic season, while heaped praise on Boyce, who he expects to get significant purchase on dry Adelaide tracks.
